Egg Update from FSA
The Food Standards Agency has announced a change to its advice about eating eggs – infants, children, pregnant women and elderly people can now safely eat raw or lightly cooked eggs that are produced under the British Lion Code of Practice.
British Lion eggs are stamped with a best-before-date and carry the Lion logo. What does the Lion Mark mean?
- The first number is the farming method – usually shown as a number. 0 = organic; 1 = free range; 2 = barn; 3 = cage.
- Country of origin and the farm ID.
- Best before date
- Lion logo.
Non Lion Marked eggs should still be served fully cooked. The difference is that The Lion Marked eggs are from hens vaccinated against salmonella bacteria.
Did you know than an average hen lays 300 to 325 eggs a year – phew!
